Carica 2010 Sauvignon Blanc
‘Kick Ranch’ Vineyard, Sonoma County

Classically dry and crisp, Carica 2010 Sauvignon Blanc offers an aroma  characteristic  of this grape, with flavors of pear and guava.  Complexity derives from 10% of the wine having been fermented in French oak.   The grapes were harvested in late September due to the longer than average  growing season in 2010.  A single vineyard, Kick Ranch located in Sonoma County on the flank of Spring Mountain, supplied both the Sauvignon Blanc grapes (52%) and the related Sauvingon Blanc clone “Sauvignon Musque”(48%).  With plenty of bright acidity, this wine complements a range of foods, including spicy Asian and Latin-inspired dishes, poultry, seafood, and entree salads.  $21.00

Crisp and dry in the classic French style, this Rosé of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre has a vibrant color and a delicate aroma of plum and warm spices.  In the glass, taste the definitive berry flavors, a note of salted caramel, plus orange zest.

Carica 2010 Rhône-style Red Wine ‘ Siren’ G-S-M

This proprietary red wine is complex, brimming with red fruit flavors, and finishes with a seductive smoky note.  In the tradition of classic French blends of several winegrape varietals, the 2010 ‘Siren’ combines Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre.  90 pointsWine Spectator.

Carica’s Syrah, a single-vineyard wine from Sonoma County’s Kick Ranch, is at the heart of the 2010 Siren blend.  Through blending trials, Carica’s winemaker Charlie Dollbaum determined the final combination of the separately fermented and aged component varietals.  The wine was bottled unfiltered and unfined in March, 2012.  183 cases were produced.

With carefully balanced fruit and tannins, the Rhone-style blend is a quintessentially food-friendly wine.  Never shy about offering food match preferences, Dollbaum recommends that wine lovers offer friends a glass of ‘Siren’ with bistro-style skirt steak with wild arugula salad, grilled lamb with rosemary, Portobello burgers, and roast duck.  $32.00

Carica 2011 Grenache, Eaglepoint Ranch Vineyard, Mendocino County

Asked to describe this wine, Carica winemaker Charlie Dollbaum observed, “The 2011 Grenache has all the red cherry fruit flavor that characterizes a medium-bodied red Grenache, plus a burst of pepper and spice.  What distinguishes Carica’s new release is a sinewy, structured character that makes me think of old world red table wines—the kind that drink superbly alongside the best meals.”

Mendocino’s famed Eaglepoint Ranch vineyard, sited at 1800 feet above sea level, looks out over the Ukiah valley, some 120 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area.  This elevation means that the vines flourish in the warmth from the inland valley, moderated by cooler evening and early morning temperatures.  These conditions, and the vineyard’s rugged slopes, mean that the vines have a longer growing season for deep flavor development.   The challenging 2011 growing season, with two late-season rain storms in Mendocino, meant high drama in the premium winemaking community, and delight when the 2011 vintage reached the bottle.

Carica 2011 Grenache was hand-harvested in mid-October, 2011, then fermented to dryness in open-topped vessels.  The wine was aged in neutral French and American oak barrels for 19 months, then bottled unfiltered and unfined.  Limited production, 43 cases.

When he is asked about food matches for Carica 2011 Grenache, Dollbaum suggests oven-baked potato wedges dusted with smoked paprika, a charcuterie plate, chicken Marbella, and polenta with mushrooms.  He admits that his recommendations are broad ranging, because red Grenache has historical roots in both Spain and France.  $30.00

Carica 2009 Syrah ‘Kick Ranch’ Sonoma County

This single-vineyard, 100% Syrah has a lovely balance of complex, rich fruit flavors, notes of earth, herbs, and pepper, and a prolonged finish.  Enjoy this Syrah with pepper-crusted steak, grilled lamb kabobs, or bulgar wheat baked with black olives and mushrooms.

Carica 2010 Syrah ‘Kick Ranch’ Sonoma County

A small lot of premium Syrah was hand-harvested at Santa Rosa’s Kick Ranch vineyard on October 19, 2010.  Three Syrah clones make up this vintage:  Hermatage, 470, and 877.  Each of these was fermented separately, then combined at the time of bottling.  Clusters were de-stemmed, cold-soaked for 3 days, then fermented (75% whole berry) to dryness in small, open-top vessels with 3 punchdowns per day.  The wine was aged 16 months in neutral French and American oak barrels.  Bottled unfiltered and unfined on March 13, 2012.  Limited production 99 cases.

In the glass the 2010 Syrah is rich, but balanced, with deep flavors of blackberry and currant, with notes of pepper and mocha.

Pairing ideas:  Try this Syrah with butterflied leg of lamb rubbed with Moroccan spices.   Spicy pork sugo is also a good match.
